Tell me about where you and Dao grew up and how that has influenced the brand?
We’re both native New Yorkers. Dao was raised in Queens and Maxwell in Brooklyn. NYC and it’s unapologetic ways, beauty and toughness is the inspiration behind the brand. Public School believes in finding perfection in imperfection.
What’s in store this season?
We’re truly excited about this season and going forward. As New York is in our blood, it made sense to make sure all of our product was made here. ‘Made in New York,’ is on our labels, but it has a deeper meaning than just the product being made in New York…
What was the main influence and inspiration for the A/W 12 collection?
Our influence and inspiration doesn’t ever veer too far. We have a pretty clear point of view that doesn’t change much from season to season. Our inspirations only help build on top of the look we’ve already created. We called the A/W 12 collection, ‘The Outsider.’
Can you explain the lifestyle of Public School?
The lifestyle of Public School can be explained in three words: hard, modern and sophisticated.
Who would you say was really setting the bar in design at the moment?
Besides the big houses…we’re really enjoying Parabal Gurung’s push in womenswear.
What are you most excited about this season?
We’re really excited to debut the collection as you put so much time into it and can’t wait for others to view it. Also we’re excited about the short film we shot with Twin Shadow, who also scored our presentation music.
