Editors in fashion are notoriously demanding, strict and ruthless. The industry wouldn’t be the same without the fear and awe they inspire, and this is exactly as it should be. They are the leading ladies, the master puppeteers pulling the strings of the industry. It’s no wonder that the icy demeanour of characters such as Miranda Priestly in the film The Devil Wears Prada achieve such cult status; as members of the public, we’re hooked.
Anna Wintour of American Vogue, Carine Roitfeld, Parisian Vogue’s previous editor, and Anna Dello Russo of Japanese Vogue, are all extremely influential women, unleashing their fashion-savvy knowledge onto the pages of glossies every month. They perch behind their desks (or we imagine they do) in next season’s ensembles, and clack along in their Louboutins deciding what to bring to the fashion foreground, months in advance of it ever hitting our radar. Telling us who is hot and who is not, and instructing us on what – and who – the ‘next big thing’ will be. They have the power to sculpt our decisions and mould our desires each and every season.
Each one comes with their own individual style, gracing the gossip columns and style blogs in flawless outfits, suiting each one’s unique persona perfectly – and not necessarily following the trends they shaped.
Whether you know who they are or not, they are already deciding what will grace their publications’ pages next year and selecting the items we’ll want to buy. Whether you like it or not, you’ll never be able to ignore them.
Editors, we salute you.
