‘Sometimes I dream of my collection,’ explains London-based designer Viking Wong, who works best at the dead of night or when he’s sleeping. The avant-garde designer, who graduated from London College of Fashion only two years ago has already left a lasting impression on the fashion world and his A/W 11 collection, Ça c’est moi, concretes him as one to watch.
‘My design ideas are fuelled by minute details missed in everyday life. Sometimes they can be completely irrelevant.’ Wong’s love for subtlety is evident in each of his garments, giving classic pieces like the little black dress and staple work wear blazer timeless appeal.
His website describes his clothing as ‘bold work wear and refined eveningwear that exude elegance,’ which allow his fans to portray their inner power-woman in an understated monochromatic palette. Every garment in the collection has its own surprising detail – the mohair military coat, for example, is a gorgeously structured winter jacket from the front until the model turns around and reveals a gaping hole in the back. Layering is a must.
The length of time and thought behind each piece is evident in the designs and it’s the fine but clever details that make the garments stick in the mind.
Wong already has a small team who work alongside him and who he deems invaluable, ‘ I have a brilliant team, without them nothing would be possible,’ and needs them just as much as he needs space, music and food when he’s designing.
The future looks promising for Wong who can only go on to bigger and better things from here. Vogue named him as one of the top twelve designers to watch in 2011 and it’s likely he’ll be staying on that list for 2012. He’s definitely on ours.
