If your interests span Corinne Day’s fashion photography, Kate Moss and THE FACE magazine then all your dreams have come true. Friday 2nd September will see The Gimpel Fils gallery in central London host Corinne Day THE FACE, an exhibition revisiting the work of the celebrated photographer. But be quick, it’s only open for one month.

 

Corinne Day’s daring and provocative imagery came to life within the pages of cult magazine, The Face. This exhibition will revisit her earliest work and document how she launched the career of another big name in fashion, Kate Moss, over 21 years ago.

 

It will be a testament to Day’s career and will include images from Day’s fashion stories, Heaven is Real and Borneo, published respectively in the February ’91 and August ’91 editions of The Face. They show Day’s playfulness and ability to draw out her subjects in her images. Her photographs do not feel staged or posed, and the people she chose to work with never felt removed from the everyday world. Through their unbridled familiarity, Day captured the zeitgeist of early 90’s Britain.

 

The Face, which broke boundaries in its heyday for its radical art direction, ‘set out a new editorial task of expressing the underground movements of the 90’s. Acid house, ecstasy and the massive, rapid rise of rave culture was the magazine’s inspiration. It felt like a time for smiling rather than pouting, for bright colours and openness and also for something more natural and real – which Corinne Day’s images tapped into very clearly’ explains editor Sheryl Garrett.

 

A new book of Day’s unpublished work, Heaven is Real is also to go on sale later this month.

 

Corinne Day THE FACE will run from the 2nd September- 1st October at The Gimpel Fils Gallery, London.
